Furthermore, within the traces, applying the provisional based on the real has its intention in the real, but the intention in the real is difficult to fathom. Why? The conjured city is provisional, but people understand it as real; this is not recognizing the provisional and also not knowing the real. If one abolishes the provisional and reveals the real, the intention is in the provisional, and the provisional is then easy to fathom. Why? Since one knows that the single matter of the conjured city was the Buddha's provisional deployment, one then comprehensively fathoms the Buddha-dharmas [as numerous as] the sands of the Ganges, and reaches far back to the expedients of long eons ago. Therefore the Avataṃsaka explains that for an avaivartika, many enumerations of things are clarified—this is precisely that meaning. If one opens the provisional and reveals the real, having penetrated phenomenal dharmas, the intent of the provisional then ceases, nor does one seek the real far away apart from the provisional. The provisional is none other than the real, and there is no separate provisional besides; therefore it is said to open the provisional and reveal the real.
