Furthermore, as for the benefit of dissemination: previously, in disseminating the trace gate, it was those bodhisattvas who made vows and the arhats who received predictions, propagating the sūtra in this land and other lands, whose merits were discussed. Examining the text, it only clarifies hidden benefit, not mentioning manifest benefit. Now expounding the original source gate, it entrusts the dharmas possessed by all buddhas, which also encompasses the dharmas of the trace gate. The treasury of secret mysteries is none other than the true mark within the original source and the traces. All the extremely profound matters are none other than cause and effect within the original source and the traces. Such dharmas as these are entrusted to bodhisattvas [as numerous as] the dust motes of a thousand worlds, propagating the sūtra on the stage of the dharma-kāya; how could it merely be like the physical body propagating the sūtra in this land and other lands? With bodies of the ten dharma realms traveling across lands, there are both hidden and manifest benefits. A doubter says: 'Where there is a dharma-kāya, there is always a buddha; why is there need for bodhisattvas to propagate it?' But propagation rests with people, waiting for the time and waiting for companions; just as although the Buddha was in the world, Mañjuśrī entered the dragon palace; although there is a buddha at the place of the dharma-kāya, external conditions are again required. Therefore the Buddha made the entrustment, extending his tongue, patting their heads, in various manners diligently entrusting it, causing the propagation of this Dharma to obtain immeasurable, subtle, and wonderful merits. For those who hear it, the subtle benefits cannot be counted. Therefore the text states: 'If there are any who hear the Buddha expound the lifespan, all are joyful and obtain the fruit of immeasurable undefiled merit.' This is precisely this meaning.
