For instance, like a stone-hard lotus seed: being black, it cannot be dyed; being hard, it cannot be broken; it is neither square nor round, neither produced nor destroyed. Because there was no seed at the beginning of the kalpa, it is unproduced; because it does not differ at present from the beginning, it is undestroyed—this is called the lotus seed's appearance. The innately pure mind of all sentient beings is also like this: undefiled by adventitious defilements, though births and deaths heavily accumulate, the mind-nature does not abide, does not move, and is neither produced nor destroyed; this is the buddha realm's suchness of appearance. The Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa says, 'All sentient beings are themselves the appearance of bodhi'—this is its meaning.
