7.243

For instance, the four subtle elements of the lotus in the mud and the four subtle elements of the lotus in open space do not differ between beginning and end; this is called the lotus seed's equality of beginning and end. All sentient beings are also like this: originally possessing the four virtues, when concealed it is called the tathāgata-garbha; through cultivation, the four virtues become manifest, and it is called the dharma-kāya. The inherent virtue and the cultivated virtue, permanent, blissful, self, and pure, are one and not two; this is called the ultimate equality of beginning and end of the ten suchnesses of the buddha realm. A sūtra says, 'The suchness of sentient beings and the suchness of buddhas are one suchness without distinction'—this is its meaning.
