Fourth, explaining the wonderfulness of the original stimulus and response: The sūtra states: 'If there are sentient beings who come to my place, with the buddha-eye I observe their faculties such as faith, whether sharp or dull.' Sentient beings coming is the stimulus knocking at the dharma-kāya. My observing with the buddha-eye is compassion going forth to respond. The sharpness or dullness of their faculties refers to the differing hidden and manifest, joy and revulsion, across the ten dharma realms. This refers to the stimulus and response realized through the twenty-five samādhis at the original time, not the stimulus and response in the traces. Trace responses are of many kinds: Some say that at three periods during the day [the Buddha] enters samādhi to observe the capacities that can be saved; this is the Tripiṭaka Buddha illuminating the capacities of the nine dharma realms in the defiled lands of segmented [birth and death], the stimulus and response of analyzing emptiness. Some say that samsāra is identical to truth, without need of entering or emerging, knowing naturally; this is the shared Buddha illuminating the capacities of the nine dharma realms in the pure lands of segmented [birth and death], the stimulus and response of embodying emptiness. Some say that using the kingly samādhi he illuminates the capacities of the ten dharma realms separately and successively; this is the distinctive Buddha illuminating the land of expedient means with remainder, the gradual stimulus and response. Some say that with the kingly samādhi he simultaneously illuminates the capacities of the ten dharma realms; this is the perfect Buddha illuminating the capacities of the Quiescent Light land of the ten dharma realms, the perfect stimulus and response.
