Because of three points, we know that all these stimuli and responses are traces and not the original: because they were newly attained, because they are diverse, and because they are brushed aside. Perfected only recently under the tree at the site of quiet extinction, we know they are traces. Cultivated earlier and studied later, with differences of depth and shallowness, we know they are provisional. Since the intermediate period they are all brushed aside as expedient means; how could they not be traces? Emerging as traces from the original source, how could one grasp the traces as the original source? Brushing aside the traces to reveal the original source, one should abandon the traces and point to the original source; the original and traces, traces and original, are an inconceivable unity (and so forth).
