Etymologically, it is defined as "constant" (*cháng*); we now explain this definition. That which heavenly demons and non-Buddhists cannot alter or destroy is called the constancy of teaching. That which is genuine, correct, and unmixed, and which none can surpass, is called the constancy of practice. That which is calm, unmoving, and definitely without divergent destinies is called the constancy of principle. Furthermore, it is defined as "standard" (*fǎ*): the teaching can be a model, practice can be a model, and principle can be a model. Now simply explaining its definition already contains six meanings, so how could the repeated Sanskrit word be translated by a singular one?
