First, eliminating with respect to ordinary beings: the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* says: 'When worldly texts are also called real, it refers to protecting the state and regulating the family being called real. When non-Buddhists are also called real, it refers to their wrong knowledge and deviant interpretations being deemed real. When the Hīnayāna is called real, it refers to loathing suffering and finding rest, taking biased truth as real.' All such instances have only the name 'real' without its actual meaning. Why? In the world, sorcerous arts and occult techniques are also called real, but these are mostly the bewitching methods of ghosts and spirits. When these methods enter the mind, one becomes infatuated, wildly disordered, self-aggrandizing in goodness, claiming to surpass the true and real, establishing peculiarities to stir the crowds, and displaying bizarre appearances: either filling a skull with excrement and opening the mouth to swallow it in gulps before a crowd; or eating raw fish and foul meat with exaggerated display; or going naked in tattered rags, scorning rules and standards; or coming and going straight on without asking or answering. Using various deceits and seductions on the ignorant, they cause them to believe, become defiled, and cling. Once attached, seeking liberation is impossible: internally it harms their bodies, externally it destroys their families and lineages, extending disaster to relatives and neighbours; in the present life they suffer numerous miseries, and in the future they suffer the misery of the long night in hell, obstructing the Path life after life with no time of liberation. These are seen right now in the world—what reality could be discussed here? They are subsumed under the dull afflictions and the proliferation of craving.
