As for the second proposition, 'name, meaning, and substance are different': for example, 'wondrous existence' is the name, 'ultimate emptiness' is the meaning, and 'tathāgatagarbha' is the substance. Furthermore, 'emptiness' is the name, 'tathāgatagarbha' is the meaning, and 'the middle way' is the substance. Furthermore, 'tathāgatagarbha' is the name, 'the middle way' is the meaning, and 'wondrous existence' is the substance. Furthermore, 'the middle way' is the name, 'wondrous existence' is the meaning, and 'emptiness' is the substance. In this manner the four gates differ mutually from one another, all three being distinct; therefore it is said that 'name, meaning, and substance are different.'
