Fourth, in terms of sequential and non-sequential: If one takes existence as a gate and cultivates practice relying on the gate, with gradual gradations, progressing from subtle to prominent, unable within a single practice to be immediately immeasurable practices—up to the gate of neither emptiness nor existence being also like this—these are the characteristics of the four distinctive gates. If one takes existence as a gate, all dharmas converge in the gate of existence; cultivating practice relying on the gate, all practices likewise converge in the practice of existence, where one practice is immeasurable practices, termed 'pervasive practice'—up to the gate of neither emptiness nor existence being also like this—these are the characteristics of the four perfect gates. Furthermore, the distinctive gates having perfect practice, or the perfect gates having distinctive practice, whether earlier or later, differentiates the distinctive and perfect, by analogy with the preceding (and so forth).
