9.144

開三顯一者，正就於理，傍得約教。約教者，昔教明三人入真，今教明三人得佛也。正約理者，秖是二乘真空，自有實相。昔方便不深，不能妙見。今開此空即是實相，故言決了聲聞法，是諸經之王；開方便門，示真實相。《大經》云：「為諸聲聞開發慧眼。」

'Opening the three and revealing the one' specifically concerns principle, and secondarily can be treated in terms of teaching. In terms of teaching: the former teachings explained that the three persons entered truth; the present teaching explains that the three persons attain buddhahood. Specifically in terms of principle: it is simply that the true emptiness of the two vehicles inherently possesses the real mark. Formerly, because the expedients were not profound, they could not see subtly. Now opening this emptiness, it is precisely the real mark; hence it is said: 'Decisively resolving the Dharma of the śrāvakas, this is the king of all sūtras'; 'Opening the gate of expedients, displaying the mark of reality.' The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: 'Opening and developing the eye of wisdom for all śrāvakas.'
