Generally clarifying the four siddhāntas: simply refuting the three and revealing the One contains four kinds of benefit. Why? The exemplary person delights in hearing their faults, while the petty person hates hearing their blunders. Wishing to know their faults so they can correct them is breaking attachments and curing illness; joyfully practicing in accordance is the mundane [siddhānta]. If one is attached to abiding in the three, one cannot advance on the path; refuting the three to follow the One causes an awakened mind to arise, increasing wholesome dharmas, which is called the individual [siddhānta]. Attachment to the three is an illness; expounding the One is joy, which is called the therapeutic [siddhānta]. If upon hearing the refutation of the three one attains perception of the principle, it is called the paramārtha [siddhānta]. The remaining nine are also analogous to this. Therefore, know that the Buddha's skillfulness accords with capacities and conditions, causing all to receive benefit; this is the power of the four siddhāntas (and so forth).
