Such different names are not identical, and their meanings are also distinct: the principle is ultimate and true, having reality as its mark, hence called the 'real mark.' Spiritual awareness, quiescent yet illuminating, is called 'the Buddha's knowledge and vision.' The Buddhas of the three periods use only this for self-practice and transforming others, hence called the 'great matter of causes and conditions.' Empty and unobstructed, it is called the 'path.' Rectifying and determining all dharmas, it is called the 'seal of the real mark.' Carrying and conveying, it is called the 'vehicle.' Accomplishing the Buddha's work, it is called the 'family estate.' That upon which all rely, it is called the 'ground of wisdom.' The source of all dharmas, it is called the 'place of jewels.' Complete, subtle, and inconceivable, it is called the 'precious pearl.' Having nothing accumulated yet containing all dharmas, it is called the 'secret treasury.' The secret essence penetrating without hindrance, it is called 'equal great wisdom.' Warding off the two extremes, it is called 'neither as such nor different.' Having subtle form and sovereignty, it is called the 'samādhi of manifesting all.' The means of entering reality, it is called the 'universal gate.' That from which all dharmas are produced, it is called the 'root of virtue.' Such distinctions of names and meanings are, in substance, the real mark, as has already been stated above (and so on).
