Fourth, regarding opening the crude: opening the two practices of faith and dharma of the Tripiṭaka teaching is also to resolve and clarify the śrāvaka teachings, making this the king of sūtras. Having heard it and contemplated it attentively, one draws near to the unexcelled path. Hearing is the practice of faith, and contemplation is the practice of dharma; that both draw near to the unexcelled path means they are the Mahāyāna signless practice, drawing near to the true. Opening horizontal practice means bowing one’s head, raising a hand, or singing praises with a distracted mind, all having already attained the Buddha path. Even the shallowest of the Tripiṭaka teachings is opened and thereby rendered subtle; how much more so the shared and distinctive teachings, which can be understood accordingly. Opening the methods such as constant walking relying on the Hinayana means that every minor, subtle good action, without exception, leads to the attainment of buddhahood, as can be understood accordingly, and so forth.
