In distinguishing the central purport and substance: some say that the central purport is itself the substance, and the substance is itself the central purport. We do not accept this now. Why? Since the central purport consists of cause and effect, cause and effect are two; the substance is neither cause nor effect, so the substance is non-dual. If the substance were two, the substance would not be the substance; if the substance were non-dual, the substance would not be the central purport. If the central purport were non-dual, the central purport would not be the central purport; if the central purport were two, the central purport would not be the substance. How then can one say: the substance is itself the central purport, and the central purport is itself the substance? Furthermore, pillars and beams are the structural framework of a house, and the empty space of the house is what is captured by the beams and pillars; one should not take the beams and pillars to be the empty space of the house, nor the empty space of the house to be the beams and pillars. If the central purport and the substance were identical, the fault would be like this. Furthermore, if the central purport and the substance were completely different, the two dharmas would be isolated and disconnected: the central purport would not be the central purport that reveals the substance, and the substance would not be the substance belonging to the central purport. If the central purport were not the central purport that reveals the substance, it would be errant, inverted, and unsealed; if the substance were not the substance belonging to the central purport, the substance would be narrow and not all-encompassing, and apart from the dharma-nature there would be separate causes and effects. If the central purport and the substance were different, the fault would be like this.
