Those [masters] regarded the Avataṃsaka-sūtra as superior, so I have brought forward one or two lines, not intending to disparage it; if one were to compare their superiority and inferiority, one might lose the essential purport. It is simply that this Lotus Sūtra opens the provisional and reveals the original source; in both its earlier and later texts, doubts were numerous and requests doubled, unlike other sūtras. It was precisely because it profoundly discusses the Buddha's teaching, marvelously speaks the sage's mind, proximately unites with the perfect cause, and distantly unfolds the original fruit, that doubts and requests did not cease. If one can accurately know the characteristics of the teaching, one will recognize the Tathāgata's two wisdoms of the provisional and the real. The intention of the teaching is exceedingly profound; such is its outline.
