"Noble" [in noble truth] stands in opposition to and refutes heterodox teachings, hence it is called "correct and noble." "Truth" has three explanations (and so on): that its self-nature is not illusory, hence it is called "truth"; furthermore, by seeing these four [truths] one attains non-inverted awakening, hence it is called "truth"; furthermore, by being able to reveal and show this teaching to others, it is named "truth." The Great Sūtra states: "Ordinary beings have suffering, but no truth. Śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas have suffering and have the truth of suffering." One should know that because ordinary beings do not see noble principle, do not attain wisdom, and cannot expound it, they have merely suffering without the truth. Śrāvakas are endowed with the three meanings, hence it is called "truth." This explanation accords with the sūtra.
