Since there is retrogression from Summit, retrogression from Heat should also be spoken of. When the practitioner is at Summit, there are many obstacles from affliction and karma. The afflictions and so forth think thus: 'If the practitioner reaches Acceptance, in whose body shall I produce retribution?' When leaving the desire realm, they also think: 'If the practitioner leaves the desire realm, in whose body shall I produce retribution?' When leaving the stage of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, they also think: 'Once the practitioner leaves desire for that [stage], they will never again receive rebirth; in whose body shall I produce retribution?' At these three times, there are many obstacles. Retrogressing because of obstacles, they feel great sorrow and anguish. Like a person who sees a treasure trove and rejoices greatly, but loses it just as they wish to take it. One who abides in the phenomenon of Summit thinks to themselves: 'Before long I shall attain Acceptance, forever cut off the evil destinies, and obtain great and weighty benefits, like a noble one.' Yet suddenly retrogressing and losing it, they therefore feel great sorrow and anguish; thus it is spoken of as retrogression from Summit.
