Moreover, within each and every dhyāna, according to the dharma gate entered, the bodhisattva has loving-kindness and compassion for sentient beings—just as parents obtaining food do not forget their children. Pitying those in ignorance and darkness who do not seek bliss inwardly within themselves but seek it outwardly from others, indulging in the five desires, seeking suffering, fearing loss and grieving, where all desires have no bliss—for this reason they give rise to compassion. Seeing that the afflictions of desire are like this, how can they be removed? By attaining the bliss of dhyāna concentration, they will not be deceived by them; therefore they give rise to loving-kindness. There are four universal vows.
