The realm of existence among hungry ghosts is destroyed by using the joy-of-mind samādhi. This realm constantly suffers the pains of hunger and thirst due to evil karma, the pain of the defilements of views and thoughts, the pain of the obscuring adventitious defilements, and the pain of fundamental ignorance. To destroy all these pains, the bodhisattva cultivates the aforementioned precepts to destroy the pain of evil karma; cultivates concentration to subdue the pain of views and thoughts; cultivates the wisdom of arising and non-arising to destroy the pain of views and thoughts; cultivates immeasurable wisdom to destroy the pain of sands of dust; and cultivates uncreated wisdom to destroy the pain of ignorance. Destroying the pain of views and thoughts consummates the unconditioned joy-of-mind samādhi; destroying the pain of evil karma and sands of dust consummates the joy-of-mind samādhi of wide learning and discrimination; and destroying the pain of ignorance consummates the samādhi of constant joy. Through the loving-kindness and compassion of their fundamental practice, they subtly perfume the dharma realm. If in that path of hungry ghosts there are capacities and conditions that connect with their loving-kindness and compassion, by the power of the king samādhi they go to respond to them without stirring from the dharma-nature, manifesting the appropriate body and preaching the appropriate Dharma. If there is a capacity for goodness, they respond with the loving-kindness and compassion of holding the precepts, extending fragrant milk from their hands to give and satisfy them fully; if there is a capacity to enter emptiness, they respond with the loving-kindness and compassion of arising and non-arising, leading them to reach the unconditioned shore; if there is a capacity to enter the provisional, they respond with immeasurable loving-kindness and compassion, leading them to disport in the five paths; and if there is a capacity to enter the middle, they respond with uncreated loving-kindness and compassion, leading them to purify the roots of the three poisons and attain the Buddha Path without doubt. Since the bodhisattva has already attained joy oneself and causes others to attain joy as well, it is therefore called the 'joy-of-mind samādhi.'
