Among the teachings of the five flavors, regarding the use of spiritual penetrations: whatever the spiritual power used in the milk teaching, whether more or less, it merely expresses two meanings: one crude and one wondrous. The Tripiṭaka's use of spiritual power, whether more or less, is solely for one crude [meaning]. The Correct and Equal's use of spiritual power, whether more or less, is three crude and one wondrous. The Prajñā's use of spiritual power, whether more or less, is two crude and one wondrous. This sūtra's spiritual power, whether more or less, is solely for one wondrous [meaning]. Therefore, the auspicious signs in the 'Introductory Chapter' are ten, and all express the wondrous: 'The earth being entirely adorned and pure' expresses the wondrous principle. 'Emitting light from between the brows' expresses wondrous wisdom. 'Entering into samādhi' expresses wondrous practice. 'The sky raining four kinds of flowers' expresses wondrous stages. 'The sandalwood fragrance wind' expresses the wondrous vehicle. 'The fourfold assembly all having doubts' expresses the capacity, and 'seeing eighteen thousand lands' expresses the response; these two clarify the wondrous stimulus and response. 'The earth shaking in six ways' expresses wondrous spiritual penetration. 'The heavenly drums sounding of themselves' and 'preaching the Dharma for their sake' express wondrous preaching of the Dharma. 'The great assembly of devas and nāgas rejoicing' expresses the wondrous retinue. 'Further seeing the Buddha's disciples cultivating various practices' expresses the wondrous benefit. These applications of spiritual transformations, whether less or more, all express the wondrous. The text says: 'Now the Buddha enters into samādhi; this is inconceivable! He displays rare occurrences!' Displaying rare occurrences is wondrous spiritual penetration.
