Second, the recent benefits originate in the place of tranquil extinction (the bodhimaṇḍa), where the Buddha first attained true awakening and immediately turned the wheel of Dharma, striking the poison drum and the heavenly drum to benefit sentient beings, extending up to the time before the Lotus Sūtra; the benefits were also shallow or deep, and the deaths also tardy or rapid. Why? The teachings originally adapt to conditions; conditions are summarily fourfold, the teachings are also fourfold, and the lords of teachings are also fourfold. All are called Dharma Kings, endowed with the King Samādhi, who themselves break through the twenty-five states of existence and benefit sentient beings with the seven benefits, by analogy with what was explained before.
