When arriving at the Lotus Sūtra, all that came before is completely abolished, and only the one real is preached. Within the real, it is not that there are no expedient means, but they are merely the expedient means of true reality, and are together termed real. Now, in terms of the siddhāntas, prior to awakening there are three provisional, and upon awakening there is one real; if traversed through the four gates, there are twelve provisional and four real. Superficially, the names and numbers appear the same as the tripiṭaka teaching, but their meaning is as far apart as heaven and earth. In that teaching, the twelve provisional and four real are entirely provisional; in the Lotus Sūtra, they are entirely real. This distinguishes it from the vaipulya and prajñā teachings (and so forth). Hence it is said: "Teaching only the unsurpassed path, revealing the true reality." This is what it means.
