In the second part, which sets them apart, there are the dharma, the simile, and their combination. First, in the dharma, that self and other are mutually identical is because they both constitute functions within the essence. Therefore, having first clarified the marks of function in order to embrace capacities universally, one must take converting others and both self-and-other; these two must take one's own practice as their power. Without power there is no function; therefore they are mutually identical. In the simile, the text cites the chapter "Contesting in Feats of Strength for Marriage" from the Abhiniṣkramaṇa Sūtra, which says: "Siddhārtha, Devadatta, and the various princes competed for marriage with Gopā in various trials of strength. At that time, Gopā was on a high tower observing their contest. The princes drew ordinary men's bows, some bending them fully and some not. None of the bows could bear being drawn by Siddhārtha. King Śuddhodana said, 'In your ancestral temple there is the bow of a Wheel-turning King, which is fit for you to draw.' Siddhārtha obtained it and bent this bow fully; when the arrow was released, its force pierced seven iron drums, and the remaining momentum of the arrow reached down to the water wheel. Up to felling trees: the princes chopped at one or two, which fell as they were chopped. Siddhārtha with one stroke of his sword cut through seven trees, yet the trees did not fall. Up to hurling the elephant, and so forth." These are all shown within functions as ordinary human strength, not yet relating to holy power. The greatest among powers does not surpass Siddhārtha; therefore it is borrowed here as a metaphor for the power and function of this sūtra. The power and function of the former three teachings and of recent attainment are like the various princes.
