In the fourth, the direct explanation, the first text on the root-nature has two parts: first, explaining the eight teachings to discern the past; second, explaining the present sūtra to reveal its wondrousness. The first again has three parts: first, the five flavors; second, the indeterminate; third, the secret—these are the eight teachings. The five flavors are precisely the gradual and sudden. Within the gradual, it opens into four, and together with the two, the indeterminate and so forth, they make eight. Within the first, the five flavors, there are again three parts: first, in terms of the five flavors; second, citing [passages] identical with the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra]; third, discerning differences through questions, answers, and evaluations. As for the five flavors in the first text, it still takes the three similes of the sun's illumination from the Avataṃsaka and opens them into five flavors.
