Next, in citing what is identical, there are two parts: first, citing the Lifespan [chapter] as identical; next, citing the two treatises as identical. The first text also has two parts: first, citing the Lifespan [chapter]; next, presenting the text of Skillful Means to distinguish identity. In the first text, where it says 'not like what the three realms [see]', it means it is not the same as what people of the three realms see. Therefore, people of the three realms merely see different marks, while those of the two vehicles see suchness as being identical to emptiness. The Buddhas and bodhisattvas can be known. Why does it only cite the Lifespan [chapter] and not other divisions? Other divisions are already identical with the true mark of the trace [gate]. Therefore, the text below states: 'The trace gate of the present sūtra has identity and difference with the various sūtras: difference refers to admixture, while on the side of identity there is no distinction'; hence there is no need to cite them. However, the text below states: 'The origin gate is completely different from the various sūtras', and it is feared people might doubt, saying: if the intent is different, the substance and so forth should be distinct. Therefore it now cites it to make them know they are not different. What is called different means the distant lifespan is completely absent in the various sūtras, hence it is completely different. If so, the origin gate also has the side of being identical in the true mark; why is it not called having identity and difference? Answer: The primary intention of the trace gate lies in revealing the true mark; therefore, it uses the principle revealed to distinguish identity and difference with the texts of the various divisions. The primary intention of the origin gate is to reveal the lifespan as being long and distant; being long and distant is completely different, hence it is used for comparison. Although the true mark is present, the trace gate has already distinguished it. Now it is necessary to distinguish identity, so it currently only takes the side of identity in the true mark; the long lifespan is merely the function of verifying the substance, not yet the personal verification of the substance of the true mark itself.
