Below, where benevolence and compassion are explained as the meaning of response, whether isolated or conjoined, can be understood by analogy to this. As for 'the power of the root of benevolence,' it is as the Great Sūtra says in fascicle fourteen, the chapter 'Pure Conduct': 'Devadatta caused Ajātaśatru to release the drunken elephant Dhanapāla, intending to harm the Tathāgata and his disciples. At that time, it trampled and killed immeasurable living beings. Smelling the blood, the elephant became doubly mad and drunk beyond ordinary. Seeing my retinue clad in red robes, it took them for blood and came rushing again. Those among my disciples who were not yet free from desire scattered and fled in all directions, and the people of the city thought I had perished. Devadatta rejoiced: "How delightful! My wish is fulfilled!" At that time, I immediately entered the samādhi of benevolence, extended my hand and showed it to him, whereupon from my five fingers five lions emerged. When that elephant saw them, it was terrified, lost control of its bowels and urine, and cast its body down in prostration to me. Good sons! At that time, my fingers did not actually produce five lions; the power of the root of benevolence caused him to be subdued.' And so on, up to the five hundred bandits attaining the Dharma-eye and so forth, as explained at length in the sūtra. And up to manifesting a body as a hungry ghost as in the Invocation of Avalokiteśvara, as in the fourth fascicle above. The citation of the treatise stating, 'Quicksilver harmonizes with true gold,' and so forth, comes from Bodhiruci's Dharmadhātu-svabhāva-śāstra.
