Next, 'the three unfoldings' also has two parts: first, general; next, from 'hearing the teaching' onwards, specific explanation. The specific part is also first dispersed, then bundled. In the bundling, prior to the first abode they are called teaching, practice, and principle; upon reaching the first abode, these three unfold. This is spoken with respect to the three virtues obtained through practice; therefore, from the initial aspiration they gradually unfold subtly, and upon reaching the position of the first abode, they unfold simultaneously and suddenly. Taking its name from the beginning, it is therefore called 'subtle unfolding'. It also says: 'If with respect to the three liberations of the Hīnayāna', liberation through wisdom of the mindfulness station of intrinsic nature relates to principle; liberation through both of the mindfulness station of shared nature relates to practice; liberation without doubt of the mindfulness station of conditioned objects relates to teaching. One should explain this in detail to bring out its meaning.
