Part 4, "This and that," contains two [parts]: first, concluding the preceding to introduce the following; next, the direct critical analysis. This also has two [parts]: first, listing the four propositions; next, from "the Tripiṭaka" downward, explaining. Within the explanation there are two [parts]: first, the teachings; next, the flavors. In the first, regarding the teachings: initially, in the Tripiṭaka [Teaching], "name" (míngzì) [is read with] departing tone; there is no proposition of "both identical." Next, in terms of flavors: when it says in the milk teaching "two kinds," this means: "the Separate and Perfect are identical in name, meaning, and substance; the Separate and Perfect are different in name and meaning but identical in substance. Curd is as before"—this has only the two propositions of "different." When it says of the two clarified butters "as before," this can be understood by analogy with the previous application of the teachings, hence it says "as before." Here there are already two kinds like the Avataṃsaka, and one kind like the Tripiṭaka; by analogy, there must also be [one] like the previous Shared Teaching: the near Shared [Teaching] is the same as the Tripiṭaka, and the far Shared [Teaching] is like the Separate Teaching. The amount of the two clarified butters can be seen by analogy with the rest. In the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], the Tripiṭaka and Shared [Teachings] should not further establish a biased substance; therefore, although the names and meanings of the four teachings are different, their substance is entirely identical.
