Next, refuting the northern masters comprises seven passages of its own. First, in refuting the five periods, only the first period is challenged; the remaining four are the same as above. The first period has two parts: first, citing the proposition; second, the challenge proper. Within the challenge there are six parts: first, challenging solely based on precepts and goodness; second, from 'Moreover, that sūtra' downward, challenging through the substance of that sūtra; third, from 'Moreover, it says the five precepts' downward, challenging with the five precepts as the root of all practices; fourth, from 'Moreover, Trapuṣa' downward, challenging with the assembly obtaining the path recorded in the sūtra; fifth, from 'Furthermore' downward, challenging with the order of compiling the Dharma treasury; sixth, from 'If it is said' downward, challenging the single voice on the basis of being at the beginning. The first passage also has two parts: first, directly challenging; second, conceding to challenge. Regarding the next passage: 'The tally refers to the Dharma of the three vehicles' refers to the Dharma of practiced cultivation. 'The seal refers to the path of nirvāṇa': 'path' refers to the ability to lead through; 'seal' refers to the true mark; when there is the seal of the true mark, the path can then be practiced. In the third passage: 'numinous' refers to conscious mind; because there is conscious mind, it relies on precepts as its root; 'heaven' refers to the primary and environment rewards of the devas; 'earth' refers to the environment and primary rewards of the earth spirits; the Four Heavenly Kings uphold them so that the four seasons are harmonious, and the earth spirits uphold them so that the myriad things mature. 'Source of the path of father and mother' simply means the ability to give birth. The fourth is as in the text. In the fifth, the challenge based on compilation has two parts: first, challenging that it is not included among the five periods; second, from 'Why' downward, explaining the reason for non-inclusion. The sixth, challenging the single voice, can be seen.
