Next, the phrase 'coarse and subtle' clarifies the sequence of the five chapters. Generally speaking, in generation and sequence, it may be either from coarse to subtle or from subtle to coarse; as long as it is not disordered, all are called generation and sequence. The present five chapters are from coarse to subtle: the expressive name is the coarsest among them, and therefore stands at the head. The expressed essence is subtler than the name, and therefore stands second. The essence is merely the principle; practice that grasps the principle is none other than cause and effect, and therefore stands next. Although the central theme of cause and effect is subtler than principle, cause and effect of one's own practice is still general and brief; function is to benefit others, combining provisional and real, according with the long-standing capacities of sentient beings, and is thus subtler than the central theme. Doctrinal characteristics, being the discrimination of the preceding four, are therefore subtler than the four and hence stand at the end. Thus they iteratively generate one another in turn.
