Next, under 'Opening and Combining', there are four parts: first, marking; second, clarifying the purpose of opening and combining; third, listing from 'All three...' down; fourth, explaining from 'First, explaining...' down. The explanatory text itself has three parts: first, 'five kinds' means from phenomena and principle at the beginning down to speech and silence at the end, which are merely phenomena and principle of one's own practice and transforming others. However, the five chapters of profound meaning also do not go beyond one's own and others' phenomena and principle; now, using these five pairs such as phenomena and principle, we horizontally classify the five chapters, because each pair subsumes the five chapters. Although one's own and others' phenomena and principle are somewhat similar, the individual chapters do not each subsume the five pairs; thus we know the dharma characteristics and textual meanings are distinct. Although all subsume the five chapters, the generative sequence of the five pairs is quite distinct: because there are phenomena and principle, there are teaching and practice; because teaching and practice serve as causes, they bring about the fruit; because cause and effect are fulfilled, one is able to transform others; because others' capacities differ, speech or silence is appropriate. The explanation of the name constantly pervades doctrinal classification in its discriminations; essence pervades or does not pervade solely because the central theme and function face the five pairs differently, and differences are formed on this basis. The ten kinds refer to the path, consciousness, nature, prajñā, bodhi, Mahāyāna, body, nirvāṇa, the Three Jewels, and virtue, as explained below in the wondrousness of the three dharmas. Furthermore, if the lotus is used to illustrate the three tracks: the lotus seed illustrates true nature, the flower illustrates contemplative illumination, and the stamen illustrates auxiliary conditions, down to the nine triads, which should be understood by analogy. If so, among the previous five pairs, the explanation of the name sums up the five pairs; one should know that one may also use the triad of seed, flower, and stamen to explain them one by one in relation to that essence and so on, as can be seen.
