3.12

有人不信罪福墮於斷見，斷彼疑故說雜業等。若計有神我墮於常見，如破群那來問佛言誰受？若佛說言某受。更增其邪，是故不說受者觸者，但說無觸無受。此之二人雖有此疑，機在生善。

There was a person who did not believe in sin and merit and fell into the view of annihilationism; to sever that person's doubt, [the Buddha] spoke of mixed karma and so forth. If one imputes a spiritual self, one falls into the view of eternalism, as when Phalguna came to ask the Buddha: "Who experiences [it]?" If the Buddha had said that such-and-such a person experiences it, this would further increase his heterodoxy; therefore he did not speak of an experiencer or a contactor, but only spoke of no contact and no experience. Although these two persons had such doubts, their capacity lay in producing good.
