Its meaning is truly comprehensive. If one said 'increasing by one,' there is a fear of confusing it with increasing dharmas—meaning that one dharma is added to increase the previous dharmas. Now, saying 'numerical progression' means merely an increase in number, while the substance of the dharmas is not fixed: either one dharma is differentiated to increase the number, or different dharmas increase the number of the previous ones; thus it is also called 'numerical progression.' Both meanings—in general terms and according to the teachings—are like this; therefore, only the expression 'numerical progression' is applied. In general discussion, it is simply that the great substance of the dharma realm is differentiated into myriad practices.
