位大者，於大眾中為大，於千二百五十中為大，於五百中為大，於四大弟子中為大，為五山寺主，作閻浮提知事上座，故言位大。

Regarding greatness in status: he was the greatest among the great assembly, the greatest among the 1,250, the greatest among the five hundred, and the greatest among the four great disciples; he was the head of the monasteries on the five mountains, and acted as the administrative elder for Jambudvīpa. Hence he is spoken of as having greatness in status.
