After the Buddha's cremation, four pātra trees grew from the ash ground; this symbolized Kāśyapa's compiling the teachings of three asaṃkhyeya kalpas into the Three Baskets and the Four Āgamas. Sengzhao's Preface states: 'The ultimate principle transcends designations, and the sages thereby remain tranquil and silent; the profound intent cannot be transmitted without words, and Śākya thereby delivered teachings. Restraining body and speech, he guarded them with prohibitive vinaya; clarifying good and evil, he guided them with sūtras; expounding what is subtle and profound, he analyzed them with abhidharma.' This clarifies the three baskets of discipline, concentration, and wisdom. The Ekottarika clarifies human and heavenly causes and effects, the Dīrgha refutes false views, the Madhyama clarifies profound meanings, and the Saṃyukta clarifies meditative concentration—all were the achievement of Mahākāśyapa. If we discuss the compilation individually: Ānanda recited the sūtras, Upāli recited the vinaya, and Kāśyapa recited the abhidharma. Hence he is spoken of as having greatness in compilation.
