Explaining dhūta according to the teachings: it shakes off twelve kinds of faults. As for fine robes: seeking them causes suffering, obtaining them brings much fear, and losing them gives rise to distress. Rag robes are free of five fears: water, fire, robbers, thieves, and royal calamity. If one stores many robes, the labor of sewing, mending, washing, and carrying them is also great; hence [one keeps] only three robes. If one eats within the Sangha, one must attend to Sangha affairs; hence one begs for food. If one receives leftover food or minor meals, it disturbs oneself and wastes time; hence one eats at a single sitting. Eating much makes digestion difficult and gives rise to sleepiness and indolence; eating too little brings hunger and exhaustion with a lack of strength; hence one eats a measured amount of food. Having many vessels causes many hindrances in washing and keeping them; hence one eats from a single bowl. Requiring juices causes labor and commotion; hence one does not drink juices. Dwellings give rise to attachment; hence [one stays] under a tree. Under trees one also becomes attached; hence [one stays] among charnel grounds. In charnel grounds sorrow and grief cause hindrances; hence [one stays] in the open air. If one lies down, the merit of practice is dissipated and laziness increases; hence one always sits. Two pertain to clothing, six to food, and four to dwelling places.
