《法華》論四種聲聞，今開住果者為兩：析法住果是三藏聲聞，體法住果是通教聲聞。開應化者為兩：登地應化別教聲聞，登住應化圓教聲聞。開佛道聲聞亦為兩：令他次第聞佛道是別教聲聞，令他不次第聞佛道即圓聲聞。聲聞義浩然，云何以證涅槃者判之（云云）。

The *Lotus Sūtra Treatise* (*Saddharmapuṇḍarīkopadeśa*) discusses four kinds of śrāvakas. Now we divide those who abide in the fruit into two: those who abide in the fruit through analytical reduction of phenomena are śrāvakas of the Tripiṭaka teaching; those who abide in the fruit through understanding the nature of phenomena as empty are śrāvakas of the shared teaching. We divide those who are response emanations into two: those who ascend the grounds and manifest response emanations are śrāvakas of the distinctive teaching; those who ascend the abidings and manifest response emanations are śrāvakas of the perfect teaching. We also divide the śrāvakas of the Buddha path into two: those who cause others to hear the Buddha path gradually are śrāvakas of the distinctive teaching; those who cause others to hear the Buddha path non-gradually are śrāvakas of the perfect teaching. The meaning of "śrāvaka" is vast and boundless—how could one judge it solely by those who realize nirvāṇa? (and so forth).
