二、明數者，即是一萬二千人也。本迹者，本是一萬二千菩薩，迹為萬二千聲聞也。觀者，觀十二入，一入具十法界，一界又十界，界界各十如是，即是一千，一入既一千，十二入即是萬二千法門也。

Second, explaining the number: that is, twelve thousand people. Regarding origin and traces: in their origin they were twelve thousand bodhisattvas, while in their traces they appeared as twelve thousand śrāvakas. Regarding contemplation: contemplating the twelve sense bases, one base possesses ten dharma realms, one realm again has ten realms, and each realm has ten suchnesses, which equals one thousand; since one sense base has one thousand, the twelve sense bases are twelve thousand dharma gates.
