From "At that time the Buddha addressed Viśiṣṭacāritra" downward is the third [part], entrusting the essential summary. The text has four parts: first, entrusting with praise; second, entrusting the essential summary; third, entrusting with exhortation and encouragement; fourth, explaining the entrustment. The initial praise is as in the text. Entrusting the essential summary consists of four phrases: "all dharmas" means all are the Buddha-dharma, which summarizes that all are wondrous names; "all powers" means penetrating without obstruction and possessing the eight masteries, which summarizes wondrous functions; "all secret treasuries" means pervading all places, all are the true aspect, which summarizes the wondrous essence; "all profound matters" means cause and effect are profound matters, which summarizes the wondrous principal宗旨. "All are proclaimed, indicated, and clearly expounded in this sūtra" generally summarizes that the whole sūtra consists of merely these four; grasping its central pivot, he confers them. From "Therefore you all" downward is the third part, entrusting with encouragement and exhortation, as in the text. From "Why is this?" downward is the fourth part, explaining the entrustment. Above, it said: "Wherever the sūtra scroll is present, a stūpa should be erected"; the essential points expounded in the sūtra fundamentally consist in four matters: "seat of awakening (bodhimaṇḍa)" explains the aforesaid profound matters; "attaining awakening (bodhi)" explains the aforesaid secret treasury; "turning the wheel of the Dharma" explains the aforesaid all dharmas; "entering nirvāṇa" explains the aforesaid supernatural powers. These four essentials encompass the sūtra text entirely, hence stūpas should be erected for all of them. What are called the essentials: attaining awakening is the Dharma-body; turning the wheel of the Dharma is prajñā; entering nirvāṇa is liberation. The three dharmas constitute the secret treasury, and the Buddha abides therein—this is the meaning of the stūpa. The Āgamas state: "When a Buddha appears in the world, stūpas are erected in only four places: the place of birth, the place of attaining the Way, the place of turning the wheel of the Dharma, and the place of entering nirvāṇa." Sitting in the seat of awakening is the place of birth of the Dharma-body; the rest is entirely as in the text.
