"Rāhula" is translated here as "obstruction-keeper" [Rāhu]; he is the one who obstructs and holds the sun and moon. He belongs to the realm of beasts. His body is eighty-four thousand yojanas tall, and his mouth is one thousand yojanas wide. Adorned with precious gems, he observes the heavenly maidens and heavenly gardens. When the people of the four continents are filial toward their parents and make offerings to śramaṇas, the devas possess majestic power and cause knives to rain down from the upper sky; otherwise, the devas enter their palaces and do not come out. Furthermore, when the sun emits light that shines into his eyes so that he cannot see, he raises his palms to obscure the sun; the people of the world all say that a solar eclipse is an ominous and dangerous portent, producing various wrong views; obscuring the moon is also like this. Or when he makes a great sound, worldly people say it is the roar of a celestial beast, betokening peril, turmoil, and the decline of the king, producing various wrong views. When he frightens the sun and moon, he doubles the size of his body and exhales breath upon them, causing them to lose their light. They came to complain to the Buddha, and the Buddha told Rāhu: "Do not swallow the sun and moon." Rāhu's limbs and joints trembled, white sweat flowed from his body, and he immediately released the sun and moon. Through the power of the sun and moon, the power of sentient beings, and the power of the Buddha—due to this multitude of causes and conditions—he could not do harm. In the past, there was a brāhmaṇa of great intelligence who gave widespread charity, transporting food on four thousand carts to distribute in the wilderness. There was a stupa of a buddha that was burned by wicked people; he then transported water on four thousand carts to extinguish the fire and save the stupa. Joyfully he made a vow: "May I attain a great body, supreme within the desire realm." Since he lacked correct faith, was fond of strife, loved fighting, yet rejoiced in giving, he was born in the City of Radiance as Rāhula, king of the asuras. The Zheng version translates it as "Inhaling Breath". The origin and contemplation [are as explained before].
