Regarding "circumambulated": when the Buddha first appeared in the world, humans did not yet know the Dharma. The gods of the Śuddhāvāsa Heaven transformed themselves into human forms, and upon arriving, they circled to the right; having circled, they paid reverent homage; having paid homage, they stepped back, sat down, and listened to the Dharma. Relying on the reverence of the devas, humans took this as a model; this is the explanation according to causes and conditions. "Circumambulated" refers to the deportment of walking in circles; it signifies that the capacities of the four gates are activated and all perceive the perfect principle. Contrasting the perfect with the biased, it likewise has four meanings; this is the explanation according to the doctrinal approaches. Furthermore, the Buddha's body is encircled and adorned with marks and signs; gazing up from the four circumambulations increases the samādhi of recollecting the Buddha; this is the explanation according to contemplation of mind. If by contemplating the Buddha's physical body one comes to see the Dharma-body, this is the explanation according to origin and traces.
