In terms of the contemplation of practice: it moves the six sense faculties. The mark of the earth is solid, like the rigid attachments of the six sense faculties, which had never entered the path of the Mahāyāna; moving the earth that is hard to move represents purifying the faculties that have not yet been purified. Rising in the east and sinking in the west: the east is azure and governs the liver, and the liver governs the eye; the west is white and governs the lungs, and the lungs govern the nose. This represents the arising of the merits of the eye faculty and the mutual extinction of the defilements of the nose faculty, as well as the arising of the merits of the nose faculty and the mutual extinction of the defilements in the eye. Rising and sinking in the other directions represent the arising and extinction of the other faculties in the same manner. As for the six movements: shaking, rising, surging, vibrating, roaring, and stirring. Within each one there are again three: namely, shaking, universal shaking, and equal universal shaking. Shaking directly is shaking; shaking of the four continents is universal shaking; shaking of the great trichiliocosm is equal universal shaking. The other five are also like this, totaling eighteen kinds of shaking; this precisely represents the purification of the eighteen realms (and so on).
