2.86

「觀世音」者，天竺云婆婁吉底稅。《思益》云：「若眾生見者，即時畢定得於菩提，稱名者得免眾苦，故名觀音。」《悲花》云：「若有眾生受苦，稱我名者、念我者，為我天耳、天眼所見聞，不得免苦，不取正覺。寶藏佛云：『汝觀一切眾生生大悲心，今當字汝為觀世音。』」此下文自釋名（云云）。

'Avalokiteśvara' is in the language of India 'avalokiteśvara'. The Siyi jing says: 'If sentient beings see him, they are immediately certain to attain bodhi; those who call his name are freed from myriad sufferings; therefore he is named Guan-yin (Observer of Sounds).' The Beihua jing says: 'If any sentient beings undergoing suffering call my name and think of me, and being seen and heard by my heavenly ear and heavenly eye, do not obtain relief from suffering, I will not accept correct awakening. Ratnagarbha Buddha said: "You observe all sentient beings and generate great compassion; now I shall style you Avalokiteśvara."' Below, the text itself explains this name (and so forth).
