'Mañjuśrī' is translated here as Wondrous Virtue. The Great Sūtra says: 'Clearly seeing the buddha-nature, just like Wondrous Virtue and others.' The Wuxing jing says 'Man-shu-shi-li'; the Puchao jing says 'Moistened Head'; the Siyi jing says: 'Although speaking of all dharmas, one does not give rise to the characteristics of dharmas nor to the characteristics of non-dharmas; therefore he is named Wondrous Virtue.' The Beihua jing says: 'May it be that as I practice the bodhisattva path, the sentient beings I convert all attain correct awakening first throughout the ten directions, causing my heavenly eye to see them all; that the beings of my land are all bodhisattvas of one remaining lifetime, all brought to be encouraged by me to generate the aspiration for awakening; and that my practice of the bodhisattva path has no limits. Ratnagarbha Buddha said: "The merits you have created are extremely deep; you have vowed to take a wondrous land; now I therefore name you Mañjuśrī. In the northern Joyful world you will become a buddha named Joy-Treasury-Maṇi-Jewel-Accumulation Buddha."' Now he is still present; hearing his name eradicates the four grave offenses; he acts as a bodhisattva to manifest shadow and echo for Śākyamuni. In contemplation of mind, the principle of the nature of the mind is the secret of the three virtues, neither vertical nor horizontal, hence called Wondrous Virtue.
