Regarding the text on Śākya[muni], there are also three parts: first, paired praise; second, paired explanation; third, paired conclusion. 'Since I achieved Buddhahood' praises real wisdom. If real wisdom is not complete, the Buddha-path is not accomplished; since it says 'achieved Buddhahood', once one is accomplished all are accomplished, which is praising real wisdom. From 'by various causes and conditions' downward praises expedient wisdom. For over forty years, he adapted to sentient beings with three kinds of other-converting expedient and real, hence it says 'various causes and conditions'. 'Parables': in the Hīnayāna, plantain trees and water foam are used as parables; in the Mahāyāna, Gandharva cities and mirror illusions are used as parables. Relying on the treatises, Hīnayāna is compared to milk and Mahāyāna is compared to ghee. 'Broadly expounding' means being able to bring forth immeasurable meanings from a single dharma. 'Countless expedient means' refers to the seven expedient means. 'Guiding sentient beings to make them leave all attachments': preaching the dispersed ten good deeds frees them from attachment to the three wretched destinies; preaching the pure ten good deeds frees them from attachment to the desire realm; preaching the Tripiṭaka frees them from attachment to view and thought [afflictions]; preaching the bodhisattva dharma frees them from attachment to nirvāṇa; preaching the Buddha-dharma frees them from attachment to affection for dharmas conforming to the path.
