From “At that time the guide, knowing this” below is the third [part], destroying the phantom and leading them to the place of jewels. Herein are two: first, knowing that they have rested; second, heading for the place of jewels. “Having attained rest and being no longer weary” illustrates what was mentioned above: the time for nirvāṇa has arrived, the assembly is again purified and free of calamities, and the great capacity is aroused. “Immediately destroyed the phantom city” and led them toward the place of jewels illustrates what was mentioned above: correctly preaching the Lotus Sūtra and demonstrating the true mark. The place of jewels has two meanings: if taken as ultimate, the ultimate fruit is the place of jewels, as the text above says, “Only a buddha and a buddha can completely fathom the real mark of all dharmas”; if taken as partial entry, the stage of the initial arousing of the mind is the place of jewels, hence the text above says, “The unsurpassed hoard of jewels was attained spontaneously without seeking,” and also, “attaining a portion of the Buddha Dharma,” so that whatever a son of the Buddha should attain has all been attained. The Great Sūtra says, “A srotāpanna arrives in eighty thousand kalpas,” which means arriving at the place of the initial resolve to attain bodhi; this takes dull roots who, leaving it to their natural capacity, take eighty thousand or ten thousand [kalpas] to arrive. If like the four fruits in the Tripiṭaka teaching who all enter the great without passing a short time, why would they need eighty thousand or ten thousand? (and so forth).
