1.38

言帖釋者，但今通途消經尚異諸見，況法華部又異諸經，故一一句四意消釋，仍恐後來不達四意，預為四重消釋四意。言「得意」者，至消文時，或四釋不備但存一二，餘者比知。

Regarding “line-by-line interpretation”: even our current, general manner of explaining the sūtra differs from various perspectives, not to mention that the Lotus division also differs from other sūtras; therefore, line by line and phrase by phrase, it is explained using four perspectives. Still fearing that later students would not comprehend the four perspectives, four tiers of explanation of the four perspectives are provided in advance. Regarding “grasping the import”: when it comes to the line-by-line interpretation of the text, sometimes the four explanations are not completely presented, retaining only one or two, while the rest are to be known by inference.
