When there was no teaching, then through internal perfuming one awakened of oneself. On a day when there is teaching, how could one cling to delusion? Just as a hundred blind persons lost together do not know the path, and one who was lost reaches [the destination] first and teaches the rest who are lost—if the rest who are lost cling to their foolishness and do not accept the teaching of the first, whose fault is it? Moreover, verifying that the benefits obtained from Śākyamuni's single lifetime of transformation are inconceivable, how much more so the benefits prior to that, which are difficult to recount! How could one not receive the teaching? Nevertheless, in the end this becomes a useless discussion; one cannot take this as a limit, because it offers no benefit to one who receives the teaching. Furthermore, in the worlds of the ten directions there are also those who awaken through smelling fragrance, feeling touch, or staring fixedly. How could one seek their beginning through verbal teachings alone?
