Regarding 'the former are merits of resemblance', etc., this points to the 'five stages after the extinction' mentioned in the 'Discrimination of Merits' chapter. The Great Master at times, relying on the Contemplation of Samantabhadra, determined the five stages to be within the six sense faculties, hence saying 'resemblance'. If pointing to the four faiths, they precisely correspond to resemblance. Here, the chapter that compares the initial stage is again the fifty-eighth: hearing in the initial Dharma assembly may well be the initial stage, but the fifty-eighth must be the initial person in the stage of rejoicing with joy. However, the chapter title 'Rejoicing with Joy' is not specifically limited to the initial [person], but comprehensively covers the fifty persons. Regarding 'practice...' down to 'etc.', this extensively clarifies the characteristics of practice: these fifty virtues may be fully possessed by one person, or each person may possess one; depending on their power of merit, they need not necessarily all be complete. In the verses, the verses praise five matters from the preceding rejoicing and do not versify the question and answer, which can be known by standard; in versifying hearing the sūtra, the order is slightly varied, which can be known by comparison.
